Spartans Sweep Bergen with 7th Inning Magic

Greg Taylor went 5 2/3 innings in game two
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Some teams wilt from the pressure of being behind in the 7th inning ... other teams, such as the Spartans, relish the challenge.  The NCC Baseball team used two 7th inning comebacks on Tuesday to sweep Bergen County College in their regular season finale.

In game one, the Spartans trailed 12-9 entering the last inning.  Billy Turner lead off the inning with a single, but was forced out on a fielders choice hit by Elliot Freeman.  Freeman advanced to second on a balk and then scored when Dan Eckel reached on an error and advanced to second on a throwing error.  Richie Eilenberger (5 for 5, 2 runs scored, 2 RBI) had an infield single followed by a bunt single from Joey Bamford, advancing Eckel to third and Eilenberger to second.  After a fly out by Mike Tenaglia, Kyle Dauscher singled up the middle scoring Eckel and Eilenberger and an error by the Bulldog centerfielder allowed Bamford to score from first base, giving the Spartans a thriling 13-12 victory.

Turner got things started for NCC in the second inning, when he hit a 2-run homerun to right field, scoring Christian Joest who had singled, to tie the game at 2-2.

The Spartans battled back all day from deficits as Coach Yaguez used four pitchers to try and shut down the Bergen offense.  Anthony Casciano earned the win in relief, improving to 5-0.

Bamford, who was named NCC's Male Athlete of the Year earlier in the day, finished 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI.

In game two, Ryan Mickley and Richie Eilenberger each walked to lead off the bottom of the first inning and Joey Bamford laid down a bunt single to load the bases.  Mike Tenaglia grounded out to the shortstop to score Mickley and Joest followed suit, scoring Eilenberger, giving NCC a 2-0 lead.

Starter Greg Taylor held Bergen scoreless until the 6th inning when they scored 2 runs to tie the game.  Taylor, who received a no decision, went 5 2/3 innings, allowing 2 runs, 6 hits and striking out 6.

Once again, the Spartans trailed entering the bottom of the 7th as Bergen pushed across a run in the top of the 7th to make it 3-2.

Eric Bohem singled, stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Kyle DauscherTony Gotshall walked and Bohem scored on a ball four passed ball to make it 3-3.  Gotshall stole second and advanced to third on another passed ball.  Ryan Mickley then lined a shot to the right  of the Bergen first baseman and beat him to the bag, scoring Gotshall for the 4-3 victory.

Aaron Barry recorded the win in relief, improving to 3-1.

When asked about the two come from behind wins, Head Coach Adrian Yaguez shook in his head in disbelief, "It says alot about the character of our kids ... they don't quit.  We have had so many last inning heroics this season, these guys just believe in themselves and refuse to lose."

The Spartans finish the regular season at 24-10 overall and 14-6 in Region XIX as they await the seedings for the Region Tournament.

Bergen falls to 17-15 overall and 7-11 in Region XIX.
