SEWELL, NJ - The NCC Baseball team had a rollercoaster day, but in the end the Spartans advanced in the Regional Tournament, and are now one of three teams remaining.
NCC dropped game one to #1 seed Gloucester, 10-1 and then rebounded to defeat 7th ranked Bergen, 10-4. The loss eliminated Bergen from the tournament and advanced the Spartans to a show down with #3 Middlesex on Saturday at 11:00am at Gloucester County College.
The winner of the NCC vs. Middlesex game moves on to the regional championship game to face Gloucester, while the loser is eliminated.
In game one vs. Gloucester, the Spartans jumped out early as
Ryan Mickley singled, stole second and third and then scored on a single by First Team All-Region selection,
Mike Tenaglia, giving NCC a 1-0 lead.
Gloucester quickly rebounded, scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the 1st, led by a bases clearing double Eric Barbieri.
Barbieri finished 3 for 4, with a homerun and 4 RBI as the Roadrunners earned a 10-1 victory.
Jake Ruch (4-3) took the loss for NCC, going 5 2/3 innings, allowing 9 earned runs, walking 5 and striking out 4.
In game two, NCC took a 8-0 lead after 3 innings and cruised to a 10-4 victory.
Greg Taylor threw a complete game, allowing 3 earned runs, striking out 10 to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Mike Tenaglia was 2 for 3 with a double, homerun and 5 RBI and
Eric Bohem was 3 for 4 with a double and RBI to lead the Spartan offense.
Christian Joest (2 for 4) added 2 RBI as NCC improved to 28-11 overall.
Bergen finishes the season 20-18.
