SEWELL, NJ - 41 games played this season for the NCC Baseball team and it all comes down to this ... one 9-inning game to determine who will represent Region XIX at the 2011 NJCAA College World Series in Tyler, Texas.
The Spartans put themselves in position for their first-ever World Series appearance with victories over Middlesex County College and Gloucester County College on Saturday, setting up Sunday's winner-take-all event.
In game one, the 4th seeded Spartans jumped out to an 8-0 lead after five innings and held on for an 11-8 victory, to eliminate 3rd seeded Middlesex.
Taylor Magditch (4-0) earned the victory, going 6 innings, allowing 6 hits and 3 earned runs.
Ryan Mickley had a big day at the plate for NCC, going 4 for 4 with 2 runs scored and a RBI. First Team All-Region selection
Mike Tenaglia was 3 for 5 with 4 RBI and Second Team All-Region honoree
Joey Bamford was also 3 for 5.
Richie Eilenberger finished 3 for 5 with 4 runs scored.
In all, the Spartans pounded out 16 hits off Colts pitching to advance to the Regional Championship game against #1 seed Gloucester County College.
In game two, the Spartans stayed hot at the plate, pounding out 11 hits in their 13-5 victory over the defending NJCAA World Series champions.
First Team All-Region selection
Matt Smith improved to 5-2, allowing 4 hits and 4 runs over 6 innings, while striking out 3.
Tony Gotshall paced the Spartans at the plate, going 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored and a RBI.
Christian Joest (2 for 3) added a double and a RBI and
Richie Eilenberger finished 2 for 6 with 3 RBI.
The loss was the first for Gloucester in the double-elimination tournament, thus setting up Sunday's one game showdown.
NCC improves to 30-11, while Gloucester falls to 27-16.
First pitch on Sunday is set for noon.
