PARAMUS, NJ - The Northampton baseball team had their 5-game winning streak snapped in game one, but rebounded to take game two and earn a split in a hard fought Region XIX doubleheader at Bergen County College on Tuesday afternoon.
NCC trailed most of game one as Bergen chased starter
Greg Taylor (4 innings pitched, 9 hits, 5 earned runs, 1 BB, 2 K's) after 4 innings with a 5-1 lead. Bergen then plated 4 more runs off reliever
Anthony Casciano (2 innings pitched, 1 hit, 4 runs (3 earned), 3 K's) to take a 9-1 lead entering the 7th inning.
The Spartans rallied in the top of the 7th, scoring 5 runs, including a 2-run single from
Luke Szoke (1 for 3, 2 RBI), but it wasn't enough as NCC fell 9-6.
Mike Tenaglia was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and Jon DeJesus was1 for 2 with a double.
In game two, Bergen once again jumped out to a commanding 6-2 lead, knocking out NCC starter
Taylor Magditch (1 inning pitched, 6 hits, 6 earned runs, 1 BB).
NCC started to close the gap in the top of the 4th as
Luke Szoke singled,
Kyle Dauscher doubled advancing Szoke to third and DJ Williams singled, scoring Szoke and Dauscher to make the score 6-4 Bergen.
After Bergen plated a run in the bottom of the 4th, NCC responded in the 5th inning, as
Mike Tenaglia led off the inning with a walk, Jon DeJesus singled, Madison Kimballl walked,
Preston Koehler singled scoring Tenaglia and DeJesus. Kimball then scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 7-7.
Aaron Barry entered the game in relief in the bottom of the 5th and promptly struck out the side to keep the score tied at 7-7.
In the top of the 6th, DeJesus singled, Kimball walked advancing DeJesus to second, Koehler then ripped a 2-run double to left center scoring pinch runner Jake Chamberlain and Kimball, giving NCC a 9-7 lead.
Barry recorded three consecutive outs in the bottom of the 6th, at which point the game is called due to darkness, with the final score 9-7 Northampton.
Northampton is now 13-11 overall and 8-2 in Region XIX.
Bergen is 12-15 overall and 6-8 in Region XIX.
NCC returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Ocean County College.
