BETHLEHEM, Pa. - 2011 NJCAA All-American
Mike Tenaglia hit 3 homeruns on Saturday to help lead NCC to a sweep of Atlantic Cape Community College in a Region XIX doubleheader.
In game one, Atlantic Cape got on the board early, scoring a run in the top of the 1st inning, but that would be the only run the Buccaneers would score all day as
Cody Klinger held ACC to 2 hits on the day to improve his record to 2-3, as Northampton prevailed 13-1.
Northampton got the board in the bottom of the 2nd with 4 runs, highlighted by RBI single from
Brandon Shuck (2 for 3, triple).
Tenaglia (3 for 4, 4 RBI, 2 HR) opened the floodgates in the 4th when he smashed a 3-run homerun to left center. Jon DeJesus followed with a double and scored on a RBI single by
Greg Garcia (3 for 4), who eventually scored as well on a sacrifice fly from
Luke Szoke.
Leading 9-1, the Spartans added 2 runs in the 5th as
Elliott Freeman (2 for 2, 2 RBI) hit a 2-run double to score Tenaglia and DeJesus, who both had walked.
NCC added 2 more runs in the 6th as Shuck tripled to open the frame and scored on a sacrifice fly by DJ Williams, before Tengalia ended the scoring with his 2nd homerun of the game.
In game two, Atlantic Cape once again opened strong with 2 runs in the top of the first, but NCC responded with 5 in the bottom of the first and cruised to a 17-5 victory.
Taylor Magditch (5-1) earned the victory, scattering 9 hits, while striking out 8 over 6 innings.
Talas Mahon worked the 7th inning, striking out 2, allowing 1 hit.
Tenaglia, who now has 8 homeruns on the season (2 for 3, 2 RBI, HR), hit a 2-run homerun in the bottom of the first as part of the Spartan's 5-run explosion.
Leading 6-4,
Alex Longernecker hit a 2-run inside the park homerun, which scored Jake Chamberlain, as NCC added 5 runs in the 3rd inning.
Jason Okken finished 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and
Elliott Freeman was 1 for 2, 3 runs scored and a RBI as NCC pounded out 10 hits and took advantage of 5 Atlantic Cape errors.
The doubleheader sweep improves Northampton to 19-13 overall and 14-4 in Region XIX.
NCC's doubleheader vs. nationally-ranked Gloucester County College on Sunday has been cancelled, thus the Spartans will return to action on April 24th when they host Delaware County Community College.
