BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton Baseball team split a crucial Region XIX doubleheader vs. Montgomery County Community College on Saturday, taking game one 2-1 and then falling 2-1 in the second game.
In game one,
Cody Klinger (3-3) earned the victory going 6 innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 run and striking out 7.
Aaron Barry came on in relief in the 7th inning and notched his 3rd save of the season.
The Spartans started quickly, getting two runs in the bottom of the 1st as Jake Chamberlain walked, advanced to second on a passed ball, stole third and then scored on a
Richie Eilenberger single. Eilenberger (2 for 2, 2 SB) then scored after stealing second base and advancing on an error committed on a
Mike Tenaglia shot to second base.
NCC then went scoreless the remainder of the game, but Klinger and Barry were able to close the door on Montgomery and earn the 2-1 victory.
In game two, Montgomery scored in the top of the 1st to take a 1-0 lead, before NCC tied the game in the 3rd off a
Mike Tenaglia double that scored
Richie Eilenberger (1 for 3).
The teams battled back and forth knotted at 1-1 before MontCo's Dareohn Gunter hit a two-out RBI single to plate what proved to be the winning run in the top of the 6th inning.
Kyle Farnholtz (2-1) took the loss, despite only allowing 6 hits.
Shawn Heck came on in relief in the 7th and retired all three batters, including two by strikeout.
NCC is now 22-16 overall and 17-7 in Region XIX.
The Spartans travel to nationally-ranked Brookdale Community College on Sunday to close out their regular season schedule.
