BETHLEHEM, Pa. - In one of the more anticipated baseball match-ups in Region XIX this season, Northampton Community College swept NJCAA newcomer Lehigh Carbon Community College, 4-2, 13-1 in a doubleheader on Thursday.
In game one, the Spartans jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as DJ Williams singled,
Richie Eilenberger reached on an error,
Elliott Freeman walked and then 2011 NJCAA All-American
Mike Tenaglia laced a bases-clearing double to left center.
NCC added a run in the 4th inning when John DeJesus singled and then scored on a
Greg Garcia (1 for 3) double, making the score 4-1.
Aaron Barry came on in relief of starter
Cody Klinger (6 innings pitched, 1 hit, 0 earned runs, 5 strikouts) in the 7th inning and worked his way out of a bases loaded jam to earn his second save of the season.
In game two
Taylor Magditch (3-1) earned the victory, going 6 innings, scattering 4 hits and striking out 10 while allowing 0 earned runs and 0 walks.
NCC gave Magditch all the support he would need in the bottom of the 1st inning, plating 6 runs as DJ Williams singled, Eilenberger singled, DeJesus and Kimball were both hit by a pitch, scoring Williams to make it 1-0.
Preston Koehler then hit a bases clearing double to make it 4-0.
Brandon Shuck followed with a single to score Koehler and
Kyle Dauscher smashed a triple to plate Shuck making it 6-0.
The Spartans continued their onslaught, scoring 4 runs in the 2nd inning, 1 in the 3rd inning, 1 in the 4th and 1 in the 6th for their total of 13 runs.
DJ Williams was 3 for 5 with a triple and 2 RBI, Rich Eilenberger was 3 for 3 with 3 runs scored,
Preston Koehler was 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI,
Kyle Dauscher 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and
Brandon Shuck 2 for 4, as NCC pounded out 16 hits.
NCC improves to 10-10 overall and 5-1 in Region XIX.
Lehigh Carbon falls to 4-11 in Region XIX and 4-11 overall.
The Spartans host Middlesex County College on Saturday April 7th at noon in a Region XIX doubleheader.
