MEDIA, Pa. - Tyler Garr scored his first collegiate goal four minutes into the game, but Delaware County Community College eventually tied the game and pulled out a 2-1 victory in double overtime in Region XIX soccer action on Thursday afternoon.
Todd Lerch found Garr on a throw-in early in the first half and the freshman midfielder found the back of the net to give NCC an early 1-0 advantage, in a contest played in less than ideal conditions.
The Spartans held the 1-0 lead until Andrew Stahl made a run down the right side and crossed the ball to a streaking Mohammed Bah who beat NCC goaltender
Ronnie Mendizabal to tie the game at 1-1 with just under 5 minutes remaining in the first half.
Northampton controlled the second half, but just could not convert as Phantom goalkeeper Steve Weatherby (4 saves) kept the Spartans at bay, sending NCC to their 4th overtime contest of the year.
In the second overtime, Shukura Banza hit Francis Obeng with a threw ball that Obeng collected and deposited in the back of the net for the game-winner.
"Tough loss," echoed Head Coach Joe Heitczman, "obviously it was tough conditions, but that is no excuse ... both teams had to deal with it. We simply did not take advantage of some opportunities that we had."
The loss drops Northampton to 2-6-3 overall and 2-2-3 in Region XIX and the EPAC.
Delaware improves to 4-2-1 overall and 3-2-1 in Region XIX and the EPAC.
Things don't get any easier for the Spartans as they host nationally-ranked Brookdale Community College on Saturday at noon.
