NEWTOWN, Pa. - The Northampton men's soccer team earned their first positive result of the 2013 campaign, battling to a 1-1 tie with Bucks County Community College on Tuesday afternoon.
In a very high-intensity, tough fought contest, the two EPAC rivals battled through 82 minutes of scoreless action before Bucks got on the board when a corner kick bounced off a Spartan defender into the goal, giving the Centurians a 1-0 lead with under 8 minutes left to play.
The Spartans evened the contest with 1:10 remaining when
Brian Garcia hit
Aaron Guerra cutting across the middle who then played a diagonal ball to
Mike Gaudette who avoided a defender and slid the ball near post to tie the contest.
Both teams then batted through two scoreless 15-minute overtime sessions to end in the 1-1 deadlock.
"Overall I am pleased with the result," stated Head Coach Joe Heitczman, "I thought the guys really battled and obviously never quit, scoring with about a minute to play in regulation. The Bucks defense really hurt us today with their trap, catching us offsides 11 times (including a
Tyler Garr goal that was called back), but our defense played tough and
Ronnie Mendizabal made a huge stop with about 3 minutes to play to keep us in the game. We just need some more consistency and flow on the offensive end."
Northampton, now 0-2-1 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play, returns home to host Lehigh Carbon Community College on Thursday afternoon at 3:30pm.
