TRENTON, NJ - The Northamton women's tennis team battled Mercer County Community College on Saturday afternoon, coming up just short in a 5-4 defeat.
Shelby Toth and
Krista Maue won the match of the day in doubles competition, fighting through a tie-breaker to take a 8-8 (7-5) victory. Toth was also victorious at #4 singles, downing Kelly Ruzner 6-2, 6-3.
The Spartans picked up two forfeit victories, one at #6 singles and one at #3 doubles.
Meghan Conrad and
Allison Potter dropped their match at #1 doubles, 2-8, to Valerie Gapco and Salomey Owuso.
In singles action, Conrad was forced to forfeit at #1 singles when she went down with an ankle injury during the match. Potter fell to Owuso 1-6, 1-6, while Maue dropped her match to Tiffany Fortier 2-6, 2-6.Â
Michelle Konczyk fell to Miranda Leone 2-6, 3-6 at #5 singles.
Despite the loss Head Coach
Megan Groh was optimistic, "I continue to see a lot of improvement from the girls, Mercer beat us 7-2 the first time we played ... our girls are working hard and looking forward to the remainder of the regular season and regionals."
Northampton, now 2-5 overall, returns to the court on Tuesday when they travel to Paramus, NJ to face Bergen Community College.
