BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Northampton Community College split a non-conference doubleheader vs. Ocean County College on Saturday afternoon, dropping game one 4-2 and rallying to win game two, 7-6.
In game one, Ocean County broke a 2-2 tie with 2 runs in the top of the 7th inning, highlighted by Mitchell Preston's RBI double, to take a 4-2 advantage and then held NCC scoreless in the bottom of the 7th to earn the win.
Zach Sheranko was 2 for 3 and
Tyler Duplaga was 2 for 3 with a triple to pace the NCC offense.
Dylan Borawski (1-1) took the loss for NCC, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) in his 1.1 innings of work.
Northampton scored both of their runs in the bottom of the 5th, highlighted by a RBI single from
Nick Todero which scored
Josh McClain.
In game two,
Josh McClain (2 for 4) laced a game-winning single to centerfield in the bottom of the 7th to score
Mike Agosto and give NCC a 7-6 victory.
Matt Roberts earned the victory in relief, allowing 1 earned run, 2 hits and striking out 1 in improving his record to 2-0.
Ocean led 5-4 heading into the bottom of the 5th inning when
Tyler Ruoss (2 for 3) ripped a RBI double scoring Agosto (2 for 3) to tie the game at 5-5.
The Vikings regained the lead with a run in the top of the 7th, setting the stage for McClain's two-out heroics.
Nick Todero singled followed by a
Mike Agosto single, advancing Todero to second base.
Zach Sheranko laid a bunt down the third base line, which led to a throwing error by the Viking pitcher, scoring Todero to tie the game at 6-6 and advancing Agosto to 3rd base. After two outs, McClain's single found green in the outfield giving the Spartans the come-from-behind 7-6 victory.
The doubleheader split moves nationally-ranked Northampton to 14-3 overall, while Ocean is now 12-5.
The Spartans return to the diamond on Sunday as they host perennial Region XIX power Camden County College in a doubleheader starting at 12pm.
