SCHNECKSVILLE, Pa. - The Northampton baseball team, which received votes in the latest NJCAA national poll, captured their third consecutive EPAC championship with a 10-8 victory over Lehigh Carbon Community College on Tuesday afternoon at Cougar Stadium.
Northampton jumped out with 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning, with four walks and a hit batter. Lehigh Carbon responded with 6 runs in the bottom half of the inning, knocking starter
Sean Williams (2/3 of an inning, 6 runs allowed) out of the game.
Trailing 7-2 entering the top of the 3rd inning, the Spartans plated 6 runs as
Josh McClain singled,
Dylan Tamecki singled and following a
Luini Ortiz strikeout,
Tyler Ruoss tripled down the right field line, to score McClain and Tamecki.
Alex Zaner (2 for 3) then singled, scoring Ruoss.
Nick Todero singled,
Mike Agosto (2 for 4) walked and
Zach Sheranko (2 for 5, 3 RBI) tripled to clear the bases, putting NCC up 8-7.
LCCC tied the contest at 8-8 with a run in the bottom of the 4th, but the Spartans were able to manufacture two runs in the top of the 7th as
Ben Hauser singled, followed by an
Alex Zaner sacrifice bunt, which advanced Hauser to second base.
Nick Todero then reached base on an error, which scored Hauser.
Mike Agosto then singled to score Todero and give NCC a 10-8 lead.
The Spartans plated 3 more runs in the top of the 8th inning, to take a 13-8 advantage, but the game was called due to darkness and the score reverted back to the 10-8 after the 7 complete innings.
Northampton, which improves to 18-6 overall, is now 9-0 in conference play, capturing their third consecutive title.
Lehigh Carbon falls to 11-7 overall and 5-3 in conference.
The Spartans are scheduled to host Montgomery County Community College on Thursday in a conference 9-inning game starting at 3:30pm.
