Tennis Opens 2014 with Victory over Bucks County

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton women's tennis team opened the 2014 campaign with an 8-1 victory over Bucks County Community College on Friday afternoon at the Northwood Racquet Club.

Katie Newton and Emily Zygmunt led Bucks to an 8-6 victory in first doubles over Valeria Ceron and Sarina Tufano, but the Spartans then rallied and won the next eight matches for the season opening victory.

Megan Parsons and Shelby Toth downed the Bucks tandem of Maryia Piatsirychenka and Jasmine Bonet, 8-3, in second doubles while Jasmeet Kaur and Krista Maue received a forfeit victory at third doubles.

In singles action, the Spartans swept all six singles matches, led by Valeria Ceron's victory at #1 singles, 6-3, 7-5 over Emily Zygmunt.

#3 Singles: Megan Parsons over Maryia Piatsirychenka, 6-0, 6-0

#4 Singles: Sarina Tufano over Jasmine Bonet, 6-2, 6-2

#5 Singles: Jasmeet Kaur over Charmi Mehta, 6-2, 6-1

#6 Singles: Krista Maue forfeit win

Northampton, now 1-0 on the season, travels to Trenton, NJ on Saturday to face Mercer County Community College.
