EDISON, NJ - Middlesex broke a 2-2 tie with 20 minutes remaining when they converted a direct kick from just outside the 18 yard line and then withstood a flurry of shots from the Spartans in the closing minutes to earn a 3-2 victory on Tuesday afternoon in the regular season finale for both teams.
The Colts dominated play in the first half, taking a 2-0 lead into the intermission. Northampton regrouped and took control of the contest in the second half, with
Cesar Hernandez (East Stroudsburg, PA /Stroudsburg) scoring a goal off an assist from
Joey Jacona (East Stroudsburg, PA /East Stroudsburg South ) and then Jacona scored his 26th goal of the season off a pass from
Sam Gaye (Northampton, PA/Northampton ) to tie the contest at 2-2. Northampton continued to pressure Middlesex until the handball call just outside the box which led the game-winning direct kick.
Bryan Angel (Tobyhanna, PA /East Stroudsburg South ) made 12 saves in goal for Northampton in his 3rd start of the season.
Northampton ends the regular season with an overall record of 10-4-0 and 10-2-0 in conference play.
Middlesex finishes 5-12-2 overall.
The Spartans will now wait to find out their fate for the upcoming Region XIX playoffs which begin on Saturday October 24th.
