Box Score PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Northampton men's basketball team fell to the Community College of Philadelphia, 88-81, in double overtime on Saturday at Johnson Hall.
The Spartans sprinted out to an early 15-point lead midway through the first half, but Philadelphia was able to cut the margin to 9 at halftime at 35-26. Â The Colonials outplayed the Spartans in the second half, but Northampton would not go away, eventually tying the game on a
Juan Perez-Jones (Morrisville, PA /Pennsbury ) 3-pointer with .2 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime. Â
The teams battled back and forth in the first overtime period, with Northampton tying the game late in the extra stanza to send the contest to a second overtime. Â Philadelphia took control of the contest in the second stanza, running past the Spartans to earn the 7 point victory.
Juan Perez-Jones (Morrisville, PA /Pennsbury ) led the Spartans with 25 points, while
Edwin Lopez (East Stroudsburg, PA /Stroudsburg ) and
D'Montie Shaw (York, PA/William Penn ) each had 13. Â
Tyerell Mann (East Stroudsburg, PA /Notre Dame - East Stroudsburg ) added 10 points, while
Justin Kusiappouh (East Stroudsburg, PA /East Stroudsburg North ) hauled down a team-high 8 rebounds. Â
"We really got killed on the boards," explained Head Coach
Brennan McCarthy, "that was an area of concern all game, as were our turnovers (20), we need to do a better job protecting the ball ... we are giving our opponents too many opportunities."
The Spartans shot the ball well from the floor, 30 for 57, (52%) and from 3-point range, 10 for 23, (43%) but really struggled from the charity stripe, 11 for 26 (42%). Â "No question our foul shooting hurt us," stated McCarthy, "we really shot well from the floor, but the foul line was a stuggle for us today. Â Definitely a number of positives today ... disappointed with the loss, but the effort is there ... we will regroup and get ready to go on Tuesday at Montgomery.Â
Northampton falls to 3-2 overall, 1-2 in Region XIX and 1-1 in the EPAC.
Philadelphia, the defending Region XIX champions, improve to 2-2.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Montgomery County Community College to face the Mustangs at 8pm.Â
