Box Score SYRACUSE, NY - The Northampton women's basketball team got off to their best start of the season, jumping out to a 14-8 lead after one quarter, but SUNY Sullivan opened the second quarter with three straight 3 pointers to take a 17-14 lead and never looked back, winning 57-34, in the first round of the Onondaga Lazer Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
After three consecutive slow starts to open the season, Coach
Tara Belfield's troops looked to have righted the ship, scoring 14 first quarter points, but the Spartans only managed 20 more points over the next three quarters. "To put it simply, offensively we couldn't score and defensively, no matter what we did, Sullivan was knocking down big shots from the outside or beating us on the offensive boards."
Northampton went on a run to open the 4th quarter, scoring six straight points with
Tytiona Goodwin (Allentown, PA /Dieruff) getting a steal and a layup, a driving layup from
Julia Craig (Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley) and a jump shot from
Zeniyah Sanders (Northampton, PA/Northampton ), but Sullivan responded with two straight three pointers to end the threat and put the game out of reach. "We found a little spark to start the 4th," remarked Belfield, "but Sullivan drilled two deep 3's and it really deflated us."
Asia Morton (Easton, PA/Easton ) had a team-high 10 rebounds and Goodwin recorded 3 steals, while no Spartan scored in double figures.
Northampton will face Dutchess Community College in the consolation game on Sunday at 11:45am.
