Spartans Return to Final Four with Victory over Rowan

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton women's basketball team earned a trip to the Region XIX Final Four with a 66-55 victory over Rowan College @ Gloucester County on Monday evening at the Arthur L. Scott Center in the quarterfinals.

Northampton, now 19-8 overall, led wire to wire, but saw a 13 point first half advantage dwindle to one, at 41-40, with 8 minutes remaining in the contest.  The Spartans used a 20-8 run to re-establish a comfortable 13 point advantage (61-48) with 2 minutes remaining the game, but then due to injuries and foul trouble, Northampton was forced to play the remaining 1:58 with only four players. RCGC was able to cut the margin to 63-55 with 35 seconds remaining, but Julia Craig (7 points) and Lauren Thompson were able to close it out from the foul line to earn the victory.

"It was a strange night," remarked Head Coach Art Wolfe, "even though we led throughout, we were never able to put them away ... they always found a way to get back in the game and then for us to finish with only four players ... I wasn't sure what to think.  Thankfully we shot ok from the foul line (24/36) because we really struggled from the field (20 of 66).  We obviously need to play better on Thursday if we want to knock off Cumberland."

Thomson led the Spartans with 24 points, while Zeniyah Sanders added 16 points and 10 rebounds and Samantha Miller chipped in with 10.

Northampton, the #4 seed, will now face #1 seeded Cumberland County College at 5pm on Thursday at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, NJ.  The winner will advance to the Region XIX championship game on Saturday February 28th at Brookdale.

The Final Four appearance will be the third for the Spartans and their first since the 2012 season when they won the Region championship and advanced to the NJCAA Natonal Tournament.

Rowan, which was led by Sarah Kearney's 12 points and 16 rebounds, finishes 14-11 overall.
