EDISON, NJ - The Northampton Baseball team picked up two crucial Region XIX victories on Saturday, sweeping Middlesex County College 1-0 and 8-4.
In game one,
Roanderson Severino (Reading, PA /Reading Area ) scored what proved to be the winning run in the top of the 8th inning after reaching base on a single and moving to second on sacrifice, Severino rounded second looking to take third and was able to score on an overthrow to third base.
Middlesex almost tied the game in the bottom of the extra stanza as Emilio Gonzalez hit a double and attempted to score on Jack Dalrymple's single to left field, but
Frank Angeloni (Westville, NJ/Highland (NJ)) threw him out at the plate to end the game.
Walt Roland (Allentown, PA /Central Catholic ) earned the win, going 8 innings, scattering 6 hits, walking 4 and striking out 4 to improve to 4-1 on the season.
Severino finished 3 for 4,
Josh McClain (Tunkhannock, PA /Tunkhannock ) was 1 for 3,
Jakob Pacheco (Emmaus, PA /Emmaus ) was 1 for 3 and
Jake Lisinicchia (Easton, PA /Easton) was 1 for 4 as the Spartans recorded 6 hits.Â
In game two, the Spartans ran into trouble in the bottom of the 1st as starter
Sean Williams (Belvidere, NJ /Notre Dame - Green Pond ) retired the first two batters and then walked the bases loaded before hitting a batter to force in the first run of the game for Middlesex. Â The Colts scored 3 runs in the 1st and 1 in the 2nd to take an early 4-0 lead.Â
The Spartans scored a run in the 3rd and then took the lead with 4 runs in the 6th to take a 5-4 advantage. Â
Northampton then added 3 insurance runs in the 7th as
Luini Ortiz (Allentown, PA /Emmaus ) blasted a 3-run homerun (4th of the season) after
Frank Angeloni (Westville, NJ/Highland (NJ)) had reached on an error and
Jakob Pacheco (Emmaus, PA /Emmaus ) had singled.
Dylan Borawski (Hatfield, PA /North Penn ) earned the win after he came on in relief of Williams, going 6.1 innings, allowing 1 run, 3 hits and striking out 4.
Northampton improves to 20-15 overall and 11-9 in Region XIX, while Middlesex falls to 15-17 overall and 7-13 in Region XIX.Â
The Spartans host Brookdale Community College on Sunday in a doubleheader starting at noon.Â
