Nationally-Ranked Centurions Down Spartans

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton men's soccer team jumped out to 1-0 lead early in the first half, but nationally-ranked Bucks County Community College scored 5 unanswered goals to earn a 5-1 victory on Tuesday afternoon at Spartan Field.

Baidy Ba (Bethlehem, PA /Freedom ) opened the scoring for Northampton, but the lead was short-lived as the Centurions converted a penalty kick 3 minutes later to tie the contest and then took the lead for good 4 minutes later off a rebound.  The Centurions added a goal later in the first half and two late second half goals for the final 5-1 margin.  "We played with energy today," remarked Head Coach Brennan McCarthy, "but at times I think we were almost too amped up ... and it caused us to make some mental errors and to get frustrated.  We need to use our energy as a positive, but still play with focus and a purpose."

Bucks outshot the Spartans 17 to 13, with Northampton goalkeeper Kenan Meral (Bethlehem, PA /Liberty ) making 12 saves, while James Sutliffe recorded 13 saves for Bucks. Reynaldo Bonilla scored 3 goals to lead the Bucks offense.

Northampton falls to 2-1-0 overall, while Bucks improves to 6-1-1.

The Spartans return to action on Thursday when they host Lehigh Carbon Community College on Thursday at 3:30pm.
