BETHLEHEM, Pa. -
Joey Jacona (/East Stroudsburg South ) scored the game winner in overtime off an assist from
Aaron Timbe (/Larkin (IL)) to lead the Northampton men's soccer team to a thrilling 5-4 victory over Montgomery County Community College in their season opener.
The Spartans, who trailed 3-1 at halftime, sent the game to overtime on a goal by
Sam Gaye (/Northampton ) with 1:40 remaining in regulation. "I love the guys heart ... they never gave up," commented Head Coach
Brennan McCarthy, "we obviously have alot to work on, but overall I was pleased as the guys fought through the heat to earn a quality win."
Kennan Meral recorded 10 saves in goal for Northampton, while Gaye finished with 2 goals,
Cesar Hernandez (/Stroudsburg) had a goal and an assist, Timbe had a goal and an assist and
Baidy Ba (/Freedom ) had 2 assists to lead the offensive attack. "We made some adjustments at halftime and it really swung the momentum in our favor," remarked McCarthy.
Jaron Kicinski had 2 goals and 2 assists for Montgomery, who fell to 1-1-0 overall.
Northampton, now 1-0-0, returns to action on Tuesday September 8th when they travel to Valley Forge Military Academy for a 3:30pm match.
