BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Despite the stifling conditions and heat index over 100 degrees, the Northampton men's soccer team remained undefeated with a 3-0 victory over Delaware County Community College on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans earned their third consecutve shutout, as
Kenan Meral (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty ) recorded 7 saves and defenders
Matt McCoy (Upper Mt. Bethel /Bangor ) and
Bob Bradford (Bethlehem, PA/Northampton ) played, what Coach
Brennan McCarthy called, "one of the best defensive games of their careers." McCoy had five strong tackles in the open field to stop scoring opportunities, while Bradford controlled play in the air.
Sam Gaye (Bath, PA/Northampton ) got the Spartans on the board 14 minutes into the game and
Joey Jacona (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South ) added his 8th tally of the season four mintues later to give the Spartans a 2-0 halftime lead. The Phantoms used their athleticism to keep the game close in the second half, but eventually the Spartans conditioning and controlled passing game allowed them to put the match out of reach with 15 mintues remaining, as
Cesar Hernandez (East Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) found the back of the net to make it 3-0.
Northampton, now 3-0-0, will travel to Bucks County Community College on September 13th for a 3:30pm match.
The loss dropped Delaware to 2-2-0.
