NEWTOWN, Pa. - The Northampton men's soccer team remained undefeated, downing Bucks County Community College, 2-1, on Tuesday afternoon in a crucial EPAC matchup, at Cipriano Field.
Sam Gaye (Bath, PA/Northampton ) scored 15 minutes into the contest and
Bob Bradford (Bethlehem, PA/Northampton ) added his first goal of the season with 8 minutes remaining in the half to give Norhampton a 2-0 lead, but Bucks was able to get on the board before halftime to make it 2-1 at the break. The Bucks goal was the first of the season allowed by the Northampton defense.
The second half was a defensive battle, with Bradford and
Matt McCoy (Upper Mt. Bethel /Bangor ) controlling the center of the field and goaltender
Kenan Meral (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty ) keeping the Centurions off the board as the Spartans earned their first victory over Bucks since October 1, 2013, a span of five games.
"This was a big win for our team," commented Head Coach
Brennan McCarthy, "Bucks has been a hurdle for us since I took over the program, and hopefully today we have changed that cycle. The guys have really been working hard and have a common goal in mind and Thursday is one more obstacle toward achieving that goal."
The win moves Northampton to 4-0-0 overall and 4-0-0 in Region XIX.
Bucks falls to 4-2-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the Region.
The Spartans host Montgomery County Community College on Thursday at 3:30pm
