Sam Gaye (Bath, PA/Northampton ) scored the game winner, off an assist from
David Chirco (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg ), 2 minutes into overtime to lead Northampton to a 3-2 victory over Delaware County on Thursday afternoon at Phantom Field.
The Spartans trailed 2-0 with 10 minutes remaining in the game when Gaye got them on the board off an assist from
Igor Malaquias (Brazil /Colegio Ateneu do Espirito Santo) to make it 2-1.
Joey Jacona (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South ) tied the game with under 2 minutes to play off an assist from Malaquias to send the match to overtime, setting the table for Gaye's heroics.
"We were totally outplayed in the first 65 minutes of the game," lamented Head Coach
Brennan McCarthy, "Delaware outplayed us in all facets of the game, and then during the last 25 minutes of regulation and overtime we reallly played with a sense of urgency and and a high level of energy and were able to bring home a hard-fought victory."
Kenan Meral (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty ) had an outstanding game, making 12 saves, keeping Northampton in the contest.
The Spartans, who played their second consecutive overtime game, improve to 7-1-0 overall and 7-0-0 in EPAC play, while Delaware falls to 4-4-0 overall and 3-3-0 in conference play.
The Spartans are off until September 27th when they host Valley Forge Military College at 3:30pm.
