BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton men's soccer team downed Valley Forge Military College, 6-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Spartan Field as
Joey Jacona (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South ) broke the all-time school record for goals in a career.
Leading 3-0 at halftime, the Spartans jumped on the Trojans early in the second half as Jacona found the back of the net, giving him 37 goals for his career, breaking the record of 36 held by Peter Underwood (2007,08). Jacona now has 11 goals on the season, after scoring 26 during his freshman campaign. "It's a great honor for Joey," remarked Head Coach
Brennan McCarthy, "he has earned it with his hard work and dedication ... but I know he and his teammates have bigger goals this season than this record."
Sam Gaye (Bath, PA/Northampton ),
Cesar Hernandez (East Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg),
Mohamed Aisset (Allentown, PA /William Allen ),
Aaron Timbe (Elgin, IL/Larkin (IL)) and
Majed Salama (Allentown, PA/Catasauqua ) each scored a goal for Northampton, while
Kenan Meral (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty ) earned the shutout, his 4th of the season, making 6 saves. Gaye's goal was his 11th of the season, giving him 35 for this career.
The Spartans improve to 8-1-0 overall and 8-0-0 in conference play, while VFMC falls to 0-11 overall and 0-8 in conference.
Northampton returns to play on Thursday September 29th when they travel to Newton, NJ to face Sussex County Community College in an EPAC/GSCA crossover matchup at 3:30pm.
