BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton women's basketball team battled until the final buzzer, but in the end Courtney Hagaman and her Ocean County College teammates proved too much for the Spartans, winning 70-67 on Saturday afternoon at the Arthur L. Scott Center.
Hagaman, the leading scorer in the country at 29.9ppg, finished with 42 points as Ocean outscored Northampton 21-17 in the 4th quarter to overcome a one-point deficit. "She is a fantastic player," commented Head Coach
Tara Belfield, "you really can't give her an open look and defensively at times we lost our focus and gave her too much space. Overall I am very happy with our effort today, we played hard ... now we just need to play a little smarter."
The Spartans led 65-61 with 3:40 remaining before Hagaman gave Ocean a one point lead at 66-65 on a 3-pointer withn 2:50 remaining. Northampton went back up (67-66) on a
Kye Adams (East Stroudsburg, PA/E. Stroudsburg South ) jumper with 1:15 remaining, but another Hagaman trifecta with 55 seconds left, gave Ocean the lead for good at 69-67. The Spartans had two looks at 3-pointers to tie the game at the end, but could not connect.
Taylor Turrentine (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North ) scored 22 points,
Kye Adams (East Stroudsburg, PA/E. Stroudsburg South ) had 13 and
Katie Alvarez (Allentown, PA /Dieruff) added 9 points and 14 rebounds for the Spartans.
Kaitlyn Cappetta (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) had a solid all-around game, finishing with 7 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals.
The loss, the second consecutive for Northampton, drops them to 10-4 overall and 8-2 in Region XIX.
Ocean improves to 10-6 overall and 6-6 in Region XIX.
The Spartans hit the road on Tuesday, traveling to Nanticoke, Pa. to face Luzerne County Community College at 6pm.
