BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton men's soccer team turned the tables on the Montgomery Mustangs on Friday afternoon at Spartan Field. Just 8 days after suffering a 4-1 defeat on the Mustangs home turf, the Spartans came out with a renewed enthusiasm, downing their guests from Blue Bell, 3-1.
Reginald Wilson (Monrovia, Liberia/J.W. Harris ) opened the scoring 17 minutes into the contest when he was able to put a chip shot over the outstretched hands of the Mustang goaltender to give Northampton a 1-0 lead.
The Northampton lead was short-lived, as Montgomery responded with a goal just over one minute later to tie the contest at 1-1, which the score remained through halftime.
In the second half,
Xavier Garces (Bethlehem, PA /Freedom ) and
Andrew Tinna (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock) were both able to find the back of the net to give the Spartans a two-goal cushion and the defense took control from that point, limiting the Montgomery scoring opportunities.
Interim Head Coach
Brennan McCarthy praised the work of his defensive unit, "
Nick Cygan (Bethlehem, PA /Liberty ),
Jose Aponte (Allentown, PA/William Allen ),
Omar Ahmed (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South),
Giancarlo Vera (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg ),
Brody Tucker (Stroudsburg, PA /Notre Dame - East Stroudsburg) and
James D'Amato (Tobyhanna, PA/Pocono Mt. West ) all came up big for us today ...they really controlled the tempo and allowed us the opportunity to attack and change the outcome from the previous match up with MontCo."
D'Amato finished with 12 saves as the Spartans kept their playoff hopes alive, improving to 4-5-1 overall, 4-5-1 in Region XIX and 4-3-0 in conference play.
Montgomery falls to 6-3-1 overall, 6-2-1 in Region XIX and 6-1-1 in the EPAC.
The Spartans are now off until October 10th when they travel to Harrisburg, PA to face the Hawks at 3:30pm.
