Spartans Advance to Final Four with Victory Over Cumberland

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The 2nd seeded Northampton women's basketball team jumped out to a 19-3 lead in the 1st quarter and never looked back in defeating 7th seeded Cumberland County College, 78-54, Saturday afternoon at the Arthur L. Scott Center. The win propels Northampton to the Region XIX Final Four, where they will meet 3rd seeded Middlesex County College on Saturday March 4th at 2:30pm at Brookdale Community College.

"We knew Cumberland was not the typical #7 seed," remarked Head Coach Tara Belfield, "they have been playing as well as anyone in the Region toward the end of the season, winning 7 of their last 9 games.  We were able to jump out quickly and get a nice lead and that allowed us to play a little more relaxed over the course of the game."

Dom Moser (Easton, PA/Easton ) scored 28 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, handed out 7 assists and had 5 steals to lead the Spartans, while Laura Sweger (Elizabethville, PA /Upper Dauphin ) finished with 8 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.  The Spartans shot 45% from the field, while Cumberland struggled at 27%.  "It was a good thing we shot well, because Cumberland really dominated us on the boards," commented Belfield, "they outrebounded us 49-34 which to me is simply a hustle stat ... Cumberland outworked us the boards, but our defense generated 20 steals which led to some easy transition baskets."

The win moves Northampton 18-5 overall, while Cumberland finishes the season 11-18.
