Record-Setting Streak Comes to an End

EDISON, NJ - The Northampton Baseball team saw their record-breaking 20-game winning streak come to an end on Sunday, as the Middlesex County College Colts swept the Spartans, 4-3 and 5-4 at MCC Baseball Park.

GAME ONE - The opener was a scoreless tie until the bottom of the 4th inning when Middlesex scored 3 runs off Northampton starter Brendan Caraway.  The Spartans countered with a run in the 5th on a RBI triple from Franklin Ramirez (Reading, PA/Berks Catholic) to make it 3-1.  Middlesex answered with a run in the bottom of the 5th to increase the lead back to 3, at 4-1.

Tyler Melko (Knoxville, PA/Cowanesque Valley) smashed a 2-run homerun in the top of the 6th to bring Northampton within 4-3, but that was how it ended, as the Colts ended Northampton's 20-game winning streak.  Melko was 1 for 2 with 2 RBI, Ramirez was 1 for 4, Cody Herestofa (Brookhaven, PA/Sun Valley) was 1 for 2 and Christian Del Toro (Trujillo Alto, PR/Perkiomen School ) finished 1 for 3 with a double.

Caraway (4-2) took the loss on the mound, going 6 innings, allowing 8 hits, 4 runs and striking out 4.

GAME TWO - The nightcap opened quickly as Northampton jumped out with 2 runs in the top of the 1st, but Middlesex got 3 runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning off starter Tristan James (Towanda, PA/Towanda Area).  Northampton responded with 2 runs in the top of the 2nd, but that would be it for the Spartans, as they were shut out the rest of the way.  Middlesex plated a run in the 3rd and the 5th to earn the 5-4 victory.

James took the loss, falling to 4-1, going 5 innings, allowing 5 runs on 5 hits and striking out 1.  Tyler Caraway (Riegelsville, PA/Palisades) came on in relief, and got one inning of work, allowing no runs and no hits and striking out one.

Angel Lopez (Santurce, PR/Perkiomen School) was 3 for 4 with two doubles and 2 RBI, Franklin Ramirez (Reading, PA/Berks Catholic) was 1 for 4 with a double and a RBI, Cody Herestofa (Brookhaven, PA/Sun Valley) was 1 for 3 with a double and RBI and Christian Del Toro (Trujillo Alto, PR/Perkiomen School ) finished 1 for 3 with a double.

The losses drop 5th ranked  Northampton to 27-5 overall on the season and 13-2 in Region XIX.

Middlesex improves to 21-12 overall and 15-10 in Region XIX.

The Spartans travel to Ocean County on May 2nd to face the Vikings (17-17) at 3:30pm in a single 9-inning contest.
