BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Hornets of Broome Community College (NY) jumped out to a 17-5 lead after one quarter, and never looked back, downing the Northampton women's basketball team 63-45 on Thursday evening at the Arthur L. Scott Center.
In a game that was evenly played after the opening 10 minutes, the Spartans were never able to overcome their slow start, "The first quarter killed us," remarked Head Coach
Alyssa Bonenberger, "we were not in synch and really struggled to get going. After that, (46-40 Broome) I thought we played fairly well, but that poor start was too much to overcome."
Kelsey Miller (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg (NJ)) led the Spartans with 15 points, knocking down five 3-pointers,
Montana Cassaro (Bangor, PA/Bangor) finished with 8 points and a team-best 16 rebounds, while
Briana Petersen (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg North) had 8 points and 11 boards.
The Spartans won the battle of the boards, 51 to 38, but committed 26 turnovers, to just 10 for the Hornets.
Northampton finishes the first semester with an overall record of 2-9, while Broome improves to 6-6.
The Spartans are now off until January 17th when they host Ocean County College at 5pm.
