SEWELL, NJ - In a battle of Top-4 teams in the latest ECBWA DIII rankings, #2 RCGC held off #4 Northampton, 61-58 on Thursday evening at the Case Center on the campus of RCGC.
The Roadrunners, who led by as many as 14 in the 3rd quarter, saw the Spartans tie the game at 55 on a
Laura Sweger (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin ) tip-in with 4:41 remaining in the contest, before using a 6-3 run down the stretch to earn the home court victory over two of the Region's top teams.
Dom Moser (Easton, Pa./Easton ) led the Spartans with 31 points, 17 rebounds and 5 assists, while Sweger and
Nicole Robinson (Bangor, Pa./Bangor ) each chipped in with 10 points.
"We had a couple stretches that really hurt us," lamented Head Coach
Alyssa Bonenberger, "including giving up a 5-point possession at the end of the 2nd quarter, which really changed the momentum of the game."
The Spartans were outrebounded 46-35 and shot only 33% from the field, "We have been struggling from the field," remarked Bonenberger, "but our free-throw shooting is what really concerns me ... you can't leave 15 potential points at the line when you are playing against a team as talented as RCGC." The Spartans finished 16 of 31 from the charity stripe (52%).
The loss snaps an 11-game winning streak for Northampton, dropping them to 13-6 overall and 9-2 in Region XIX.
RCGC improves to 16-3 overall and 12-2 in Region XIX.
The Spartans are off until February 6th when they travel to the Community College of Philadelphia.
