NEWTON, NJ - The Northampton women's basketball team saw their 2-game winning streak come to an end as Sussex County Community College overcame a 3-point halftime deficit to down the Spartans, 53-45, on Tuesday evening at the Kuntz Center, in a game that featured five total free throw attempts.
Northampton led 30-27 at halftime, but the Skylanders held the Spartans to just 15 points in the second half, allowing just 7 field goals on 34 attempts (20%).
Dom Moser (Easton, Pa./Easton ), the 2nd leading scorer in the country, was held to just 8 points on 4 of 18 from the field.
"Offensively we really struggled in the second half, but credit Sussex, they really turned up the defensive pressure," remarked Head Coach
Alyssa Bonenberger, "overall we outrebounded them, turnovers were even, but we just couldn't put the ball in the basket."
Krista Cappetta (Nazareth, Pa/Nazareth) led the Spartans with 12 points, while
Jada Holland (Laurel, MD/Springbrook (MD)) added 6 points and 18 rebounds.
Nicole Robinson (Bangor, Pa./Bangor ) finished with 8 points, 7 rebounds and 6 steals, while
Laura Sweger (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin ) had 8 points and 6 rebounds.
The loss drops Northampton to 15-7 overall and 11-3 in Region XIX.
Sussex improves to 15-12 overall and 11-10 in the Region.
Northampton faces another tough challenge on Saturday as they host the Jersey Blues of Brookdale at noon.
