MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Day three of the Spartan Baseball trip saw games vs. NJCAA DII Black Hawk - Moline (IL) and Jefferson Community College (NY) at the Ripken Complex in South Carolina.
GAME ONE - vs. Black Hawk-Moline (IL) - Lost 4-12
In Tuesday's opener, the Spartans fell behind early, 2-0, to Black Hawk, but rallied back behind two 2-run homeruns in the top of the 5th inning from
Christian Del Toro (Trujillo Alto, PR/Perkiomen School) and
Tyler Melko (Knoxville, PA/Cowanesque Valley), to take a 4-2 lead.
The Braves responded in the bottom of the 5th with 6 runs of their own to take an 8-4 lead and then tacked on 4 more runs in the bottom of the 6th to earn the 12-4 victory.
Nicholas Klee (Reading, PA/Exeter) took the loss for Northampton, going 4 innings, allowing 7 runs (4 earned), while striking out 4 and walking none.
Andrew Corso (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) and
Juan Familia (Reading, PA/Muhlenburg ) finished things up on the mound, with Corso going 1 inning, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) and Familia allowing 1 run in one inning of action.
Del Toro finished 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, while Melko was 1 for 3 with 2 RBI to pace the Spartan offense.
The Spartans, 3-2 overall, finished with 4 runs on 8 eights and committed 4 errors, while Black Hawk (6-1) had 12 runs on 10 hits with no errors.
GAME TWO - vs. Jefferson Community College (NY) - Won 13-1
In game two the Spartans exploded for 14 hits en route to a 13-1 rout of Jefferson Community College.
Christian Del Toro (Trujillo Alto, PR/Perkiomen School) finished 2 for 3 with 2 doubles and 3 runs scored,
Mike Ferrara (Cresco, PA/Pocono Mt. East) was 2 for 2 with a double and 2 RBI,
CJ Peechatka (Henryville, PA/Pocono Mt. East ) continued to swing a hot bat, going 2 for 4 with a triple, homerun and 3 RBI and Tyler "Big Country" Melko finished 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBI.
Jake Decker (Hallstead, PA/Blue Ridge) earned the win on the hill, throwing 5 innings of 5-hit ball, striking out 6 and allowing only 1 run.
The Spartans, now 4-2 overall, return to action on Wednesday when they face Illinois Valley at 9am, followed by Mohawk Valley at 11:30am.
