MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Day four of Northampton's spring trip saw the Spartans with two early games, facing Illinois Valley Community College at 9am, followed by Mohawk Valley Community College at 11:30am.
GAME ONE - vs. Illinois Valley Community College (IL) - Lost 6-7
Despite out-hitting IVCC 9 to 4, the Spartans dropped their first contest of the day, 7-6, as the pitching staff struggled with control issues, allowing 9 walks and hitting 3 batters.
Drew Jackson (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) took the loss, evening his record at 1-1. Jackson went 3.2 innings, allowing 7 runs on 2 hits, striking out 4 and walking 6.
Dakota George (Palmerton, PA/Pleasant Valley) came on in relief, but did record an out, walking 2 batters and hitting one.
Andrew Corso (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) finished up the game, going 2.1 innings, allowing no runs on 2 hits, striking out 1 and walking 1.
CJ Peechatka (Henryville, PA/Pocono Mt. East ) and
Tommy Dunleavy (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North) each went 2 for 4 and
Cody Brown (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock) finished 1 for 4 with 2 RBI to pace the offense.
GAME TWO - vs. Mohawk Valley Community College (NY) - Won 20-0
In game two, the Spartans scored 20 runs on 19 hits and rode the right arm of
Alex Super (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty), who threw a complete game 3-hitter.
Christian Del Toro (Trujillo Alto, PR/Perkiomen School) was 3 for 3 with a grand slam and 5 RBI,
CJ Peechatka (Henryville, PA/Pocono Mt. East ) was 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBI,
Tyler Melko (Knoxville, PA/Cowanesque Valley) finished 2 for 3 with a double and 3 RBI and
Tommy Dunleavy (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North) was 2 for 2 with a double, homerun and 3 RBI.
The Spartans jumped out early, scoring 17 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning to give Super all the support he would need.
Tyler Horvath (Cresco, PA/Pocono Mt. East),
CJ Gantz (Bath, PA/Northampton) and
Matt Pierce (Brodheadsville, PA/Pleasant Valley) each went 2 for 3 for the Spartans.
The split puts Northampton at 5-3 overall heading into their final day of their spring trip. The Spartans will face Westmoreland County Community College at 10am and Monroe College at 3pm before heading back to Pennsylvania on Friday.
