BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton baseball picked up a doubleheader sweep on Saturday, downing Broome Community College 6-5 and 32-3 in their home opener.
GAME ONE - WON 6-5
Tyler Melko (Knoxville, PA/Cowanesque Valley) finished 4 for 4 with a homerun and 3 RBI, including the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 7th, to give Northampton the walk-off 6-5 victory.
The Spartans jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 3 innings, but Broome was responded with 4 runs in the 4th to chase starter
Zach Conley (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury), who finished with 5 strikeouts and 4 walks in 3 innings of work, allowing 4 runs on 2 hits.
Northampton was able to retake the lead in the bottom of the 5-4, but the Hornets were able to tie the game at 5, setting the stage for Melko's 7th inning heroics.
Alex Super (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) picked up the victory, with 3 innings of work, allowing 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 6. The win moved Super to 4-0 on the season.
CJ Peechatka (Henryville, PA/Pocono Mt. East ) was 2 for 3, including his 3rd homerun of the season, a solo shot in the 3rd inning.
The Spartans finished with 6 runs on 8 hits with no errors, while the Hornets tallied 5 runs on 7 hits and committed 6 errors.
GAME TWO - WON 32-3
Tyler Melko (Knoxville, PA/Cowanesque Valley) stayed hot in game two, going 4 for 4 with a homerun and 7 RBI to end the day 8 for 8 with 2 homeruns and 10 RBI, as the Spartan bats exploded for 28 hits in the 32-3 romp.
CJ Gantz (Bath, PA/Northampton) finished 4 for 5 with a RBI,
Christian Del Toro (Trujillo Alto, PR/Perkiomen School) was 4 for 5 with 2 doubles, a triple and 6 RBI,
Tommy Dunleavy (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North) was 4 for 6 with a triple and 2 RBI and
Andrew Corso (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) was 2 for 2 with a double and 3 RBI.
Nicholas Klee (Reading, PA/Exeter) was the winning pitcher, going 4 innings allowing 1 run on 7 hits while striking out 3 and walking none.
Trevor McGee (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) and
Tommy Dunleavy (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North) combined for 3 innings of work on the mound, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits and fanning 2.
Northampton scored 4 runs in the 1st inning, 9 in the second, 13 in the 4th, 1 in the 5th and 5 in the 6th to account for their 32 runs.
The Spartans, now 9-7 overall, will host Ocean County College on April 3rd at 3:30pm in a single 9-inning game.
