BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton Baseball team used the long ball to down Lehigh Carbon Community College on Thursday, smashing 4 homeruns in a 10-2 victory over the Cougars at Spartan Park.
The Spartans opened things up early, after giving up a run in the top of the 1st, Northampton scored 4 runs in the bottom half of the inning on two, 2-run homeruns by
Tyler Melko (Knoxville, PA/Cowanesque Valley) and
CJ Peechatka (Henryville, PA/Pocono Mt. East ). Melko finished 2 for 4 with 3 RBI, while Peechatka was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI.
Christian Del Toro (Trujillo Alto, PR/Perkiomen School) joined the homerun party in the 2nd inning with a solo shot, his 4th of the season, finishing with 3 RBI and a 2 for 4 effort at the plate.
Henry Peguero (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) notched the 4th dinger of the night in the bottom of the 8th inning, finishing 2 for 5.
Cody Brown (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock) and
Mike Ferrara (Cresco, PA/Pocono Mt. East) each went 3 for 5 as the Spartans pounded out 15 hits in the ballgame.
Noah Weber (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) earned the victory on the mound, improving to 3-2 on the season. Weber went 7 innings, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits while striking out 2 and walking none.
Nicholas Klee (Reading, PA/Exeter) pitched the final two innings, allowing no runs on 1 hit while fanning 1 and allowing 1 free pass.
The win moves Northampton to 13-0 vs. the Cougars since joining the NJCAA in the 2009 season.
The Spartans, who have won 7 straight, improve to 13-7 overall and 1-0 in Region XIX.
Lehigh Carbon falls to 5-10 overall and 2-2 in the Region.
Northampton is scheduled to host Bucks County Community College on Saturday at noon in a doubleheader.
