WAYNE, Pa. - The Northampton Baseball team picked up two victories on Saturday, downing Valley Forge Military College 16-2 and 9-2 in a non-conference doubleheader at Trojan Field.
GAME ONE - WON 16-2
Andrew Corso (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) picked up the complete game victory in game one, allowing 2 runs (1 earned), 5 hits, walking 2 and striking out 8 in improving his record to 2-0.
The Spartans had 14 hits in the victory, led by
Mike Ferrara (Cresco, PA/Pocono Mt. East) who finished 4 for 5 with a double and 3 RBI.
Tyler Melko (Knoxville, PA/Cowanesque Valley) finished 3 for 6 with a double and a RBI, and
CJ Peechatka (Henryville, PA/Pocono Mt. East ) was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and a RBI.
Corey Stouffer (Souderton, PA/North Penn) smashed a bases clearing double in the 4th inning and
Tommy Dunleavy (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North) hit a grand slam (his 7th HR of the season) to highlight a 8-run 5th inning as the Spartans blew open an 0-0 game after 3 innings with 14 runs in the 4th and 5th.
GAME TWO - WON 9-2
Starter
Drew Jackson (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) allowed 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning, and then threw 6 consecutive innings of shutout baseball as Northampton picked up the sweep with a 9-2 win.
Jackson finished with 9 strikeouts, 2 walks in his complete game 5-hitter, improving to 4-2 on the season.
Christian Del Toro (Trujillo Alto, PR/Perkiomen School) had a big day at the plate with 2 doubles, a triple and 2 RBI.
Tyler Melko (Knoxville, PA/Cowanesque Valley) hit a solo homerun in the 3rd inning, finishing 2 for 5 with a double and and 4 RBI, while
Corey Stouffer (Souderton, PA/North Penn) was 2 for 3 with a double and a RBI.
Trailing 2-1 entering the top of the 3rd inning, the Spartans used back to back RBI doubles from Del Toro and Stouffer after Melko's homerun to take a 4-2 lead that they would not relinquish.
CJ Gantz (Bath, PA/Northampton) was 2 for 4 with a double and a stolen base,
CJ Peechatka (Henryville, PA/Pocono Mt. East ) was 2 for 3 and
Mike Ferrara (Cresco, PA/Pocono Mt. East) was 2 for 4 with a RBI.
The two wins moves Northampton to 23-11 overall while Valley Forge Military College falls to 11-16.
The Spartans are back in action on Sunday when they host NJCAA Division I Monroe College.
