ROCHESTER, NY - After taking the first two games of a scheduled four-game series vs. NJCAA Division II Monroe Community College, the Northampton baseball team came back on Sunday and took game three, 7-3, before game four was called due to freezing temperatures and snow.
Zach Conley (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) earned the win, going 5.1 innings, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits while striking out 3 and walking 3.
Andrew Corso (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) finished the final 1.2 innings, allowing no runs on no hits while striking out two.
The Spartans once again used a big inning to propel them to victory, scoring 4 runs in the top of the 6, highlighted by a
Derek Stento (New Milford, PA/Blue Ridge) 2-run single.
The four run 7th put the Spartans up 6-0, before Monroe responded with 3 runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut Northampton's lead to 6-3.
Sammy Suarez (Bethlehem, PA/Shelby County (AL)) provided an insurance run in the 7th with a RBI pinch-hit double, to make the final score 7-3.
CJ Gantz (Bath, PA/Northampton) led the offense with a 2 for 2 effort, including a double, a stolen base and a run scored.
Tyler Melko (Knoxville, PA/Cowanesque Valley) and
Christian Del Toro (Trujillo Alto, PR/Perkiomen School) each had an RBI, while
Tommy Dunleavy (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North) smashed a triple.
The Spartans finished with 7 runs on 8 hits and committed 1 error, while the Tribunes scored 3 runs on 2 hits and had 3 errors.
Northampton, now 12-7 overall, is off until Thursday when they host cross-valley rival Lehigh Carbon Community College in a 9-inning contest slated to start at 3:30pm.
Northampton's scheduled game vs. Union County College on Tuesday has been cancelled as the Owls needed to make a conference game.
