Final Four ... Here We Come

FLEMINGTON, NJ - After a 3-hour rain delay, the Northampton Baseball team was able to hold off 6th seeded Bergen Community College and advance to the Region XIX Final Four with a 12-10 victory.

With Northampton leading 8-5 in the top of the 5th, the game was halted due to lightning. Approximately 3 hours later the game resumed and Bergen quickly cut the deficit to 8-7, but the Spartans never relinquished the lead.

CJ Gantz (Bath, PA/Northampton) laced a single up the middle that scored two runs in the bottom of  the 7th to give the Spartans a 11-7 lead and they held on down the stretch to earn the 2-1 series victory.

Andrew Corso (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) earned the win, going 4.1 innings, allowing 5 runs on 5 hits while fanning 5.  Corso did not return after the delay and was replaced by Trevor McGee (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) who threw 4.1 innings, allowing 5 runs on 8 hits while walking 5 and striking out 6.  Tommy Dunleavy (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North) came on with 2 outs in the 9th to get the save, inducing a pop-up to short right field for the final out.

Gantz finished 3 for 5 with 2 RBI, CJ Peechatka (Henryville, PA/Pocono Mt. East ) was for 4 with 3 RBI, including his 10th homerun of the season and Tyler Melko (Knoxville, PA/Cowanesque Valley) added 2 more RBI to his record-setting numbers, going 2 for 5, including a solo homerun.

Corey Stouffer (Souderton, PA/North Penn) continued to swing a hot bat, finishing 2 for 3 while Mike Ferrara (Cresco, PA/Pocono Mt. East) was 2 for 4 with a double and a RBI.

The Final Four appearance will be the 7th in 10 years for Head Coach Adrian Yaguez and the Spartans.

Northampton (30-12), the #3 seed, will now face 2nd seeded Cumberland County College (35-9) on Friday at a site and time to be determined.

The Region XIX Baseball Committee will be meeting to discuss a location for the Region XIX Tournament, as inclement weather looks to be on the horizon for the weekend.
