LINCROFT, NJ - The Northampton Baseball team extended their winning streak to 7 games with a doubleheader sweep of nationally-ranked Brookdale Community College on Saturday at Johnson Field.
GAME ONE - WON 6-2
The Spartans broke open a scoreless tie after 5 innings, scoring 3 runs in the top of 6th.
Tyler Melko (Knoxville, PA/Cowanesque Valley) got things going with a single, followed by
Tommy Dunleavy (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North) getting hit by a pitch.
Henry Peguero (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Melko to 3rd and Dunleavy to 2nd.
Christian Del Toro (Trujillo Alto, PR/Perkiomen School) then smashed a 2-run single to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead. Del Toro, who took 2nd base on the throw to the plate to try and get Dunleavy, then scored on a double from
Derek Stento (New Milford, PA/Blue Ridge) to put the Spartans up 3-0.
Andrew Corso (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) held the Jersey Blues hitless for the 6th straight inning, as Northampton headed into the top of the 7th up 3-0.
CJ Gantz (Bath, PA/Northampton) singled to lead off the inning, followed by a walk from
CJ Peechatka (Henryville, PA/Pocono Mt. East ). Tyler "Big Country" Melko then belted his 6th homerun of the season, giving the Spartans a 6-0 advantage.
Corso lost his no-hitter in the bottom of the 7th, but was able to earn the complete game victory, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits, walking 5 and striking out 3.
Melko finished 3 for 4 at the plate, with a a double, homerun, 2 runs scored and 3 RBI. Melko's homerun in the 7th broke the Northampton single-season record for hits, giving him 66 hits on the season.
Del Toro was 1 for 4 with 2 RBI, Stento finished 1 for 2 with a RBI and
Mike Ferrara (Cresco, PA/Pocono Mt. East) was 2 for 3 as the Spartans finished with 10 hits.
GAME TWO - WON 11-0
Tyler Melko (Knoxville, PA/Cowanesque Valley) got things going quickly in game two, hitting a two-run bomb in the top of the 1st to give Northampton a 2-0 lead, which is all they would need behind the pitching of
Trevor McGee (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem).
McGee threw a complete game shutout, striking out 5, walking 2 and only allowing 4 hits in improving to 3-2 on the season.
Leading 7-0 after 6 innings,
Corey Stouffer (Souderton, PA/North Penn) lined a RBI single in the top of the 7th and
Derek Stento (New Milford, PA/Blue Ridge) followed with a 3-run homerun to give the Spartans an 11-0 lead.
Stouffer finished 3 for 3 with 2 RBI, Melko was 1 for 4 with 2 RBI and
CJ Gantz (Bath, PA/Northampton) was 2 for 4 with a stolen base.
The Spartans hit 3 homeruns on the day, giving them 40 on the season.
The Spartans are now 28-11 overall and 8-3 in Region XIX as the await seeding for the upcoming Region XIX playoffs.
Brookdale, who received votes in the latest NJCAA national poll, falls to 31-18 overall and 17-9 in Region XIX.
