BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off a roller coaster 2017 season, the Northampton Men's Soccer team enters the
Mario Barrantes-era in 2018. Barrantes, a long-time Lehigh Valley soccer fixture, takes over the Spartans who finished last season with a record of 6-7-1, falling in the opening round of the Region XIX playoffs.
Barrantes will rely on three returners from the 2017 squad,
Xavier Garces (Bethelem, PA /Liberty ),
Abdallah Ferdjani (Algeria /El Macir) and
Andrew Tinna (Tunkhannock, PA /Tunkhannock Area). Tinna, who was named First Team All Conference and Third Team All Region, led Northampton with 21 goals, the 5th most in a single season in school history.
The Spartans will open the 2018 campaign at Harrisburg Area Community College on Tuesday August 28th, a team that they split with last season, with each winning on their home turf. "I'm looking forward to it," commented Barrantes, "we are a little short in numbers, but I think our talent-level is pretty high ... it will be a question of our conditioning and trying to stay injury-free."
