CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. - The Northampton men's soccer team clinched a berth in the upcoming Region XIX playoffs with a 4-1 victory over Montgomery County Community College on Thursday afternoon at the Proving Grounds.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Spartans offense began to click in the second half behind
Stivan Kumbarov (Wind Gap, PA /Pen Argyl), who scored 3 goals, and
Brian Sorensen (Mt. Pocono, PA/Pocono Mt. West ) who registered 4 assists.
Head Coach
Mario Barrantes praised Sorensen on his passing, stating, "Brian was able to place the ball into space, allowing Stivan to use his skill and speed to beat the Mustang defense."
Kumbarov's hat-trick gives him 19 goals on the season, tied for 2nd in the country.
Sorensen's final assist came via a rebound, as his shot hit off the goaltender and
Andrew Seymour (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) was there to bang it home.
Sorensen's 4 assists ties the Northampton single-game record set by Baidy Ba on 10/7/2015 vs. Lehigh Carbon.
Sorensen
"We struggled in the first half with our short passing game on the turf," commented Barrantes, "but Brian really got us going in the second half and the entire team was much more crisp and efficient with each possession."
