BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Delaware County Community College pulled off the upset victory on Tuesday, downing the Northampton men's soccer team, 4-2, at Spartan Field in a Region XIX / EPAC matchup.
"We never really got on track today," commented Head Coach
Mario Barrantes, "I think Delaware wanted it a little more than we did and it showed on some 50/50 balls."
The Spartans jumped out quickly behind a
Jean-Claude Pabulo (Allentown, PA/William Allen ) goal, which was assisted by
Taylor Harbaugh (Exeter, PA /Exeter ).
Delaware County regrouped quickly to tie the contest at 1-1, scoring just 5 minutes later.
Stivan Kumbarov (Wind Gap, PA /Pen Argyl) scored his 20th goal of the season on a penalty kick late in the first half to give Northampton a 2-1 haltime advantage.
The Phantoms, who needed a victory to clinch a playoff spot, were the aggressors in the second half, scoring 3 answered goals to earn the 4-2 win.
Nick Mazzella (Bangor, PA /Bangor ) recorded 12 saves in goal to lead the Spartans.
The loss drops Northampton to 9-6-0 overall, 8-5-0 in Region XIX and 7-3 in the EPAC.
Delaware finishes the regular season 7-7-1 overall, 7-6-1 in Region XIX and 6-5-1 in the conference.
The Spartans finish their regular season with away games at Valley Forge on Thursday and Harrisburg on Saturday.
