BETHLEHEM, Pa. - In a showdown of the EPAC's top two teams, Bucks County Community College showed why they are undefeated in conference play, downing the Spartans 5-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Spartan Field.
Bucks opened the scoring with a penalty kick with 28:54 remaining in the first half and added two more tallies before intermission to take a 3-0 lead at the break.
The Spartans cut the margin to 3-1 with 26:33 remaining in the game when
Mehmed Letifov (Wind Gap, PA /Pen Argyl) converted a penalty kick, but the Centurions quickly rebounded, scoring less than 4 minutes later to take a 4-1 lead.
Bucks converted their second penalty kick of the game with 19:12 remaining, to make the final 5-1.
Nick Mazzella (Bangor, PA /Bangor ) made 13 stops to lead Northampton.
"We simply got outplayed tonight by a better opponent," commented Head Coach
Mario Barrantes, "we are working on building this program to achieve big things, but it will happen one step at a time ... the Bucks program is the standard in the EPAC that we are all chasing."
The loss drops Northampton to 8-4-0 overall, 7-3-0 in the EPAC and 6-2-0 in the EPAC.
Bucks improves to 12-2-0 overall, 12-2-0 in Region XIX and 10-0-0 in the conference.
The Spartans return to action on Thursday when they travel to the Proving Grounds to face Montgomery County Community College at 3:00pm.
