DRYDEN, NY - The Northampton women's basketball team opened the 2019-20 campaign with a 72-56 loss to Tompkins-Cortland Community College on Friday evening at the Panther Dome.
Briona McClain (Stroudsburg, PA /Pocono Mt. West ) scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and
Briana Petersen (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg North) hauled down 20 rebounds to go along with 9 points, but 32 turnovers and 26% shooting from the field doomed the Spartans. "We simply can't turn the ball over that many times and expect to win games," remarked Head Coach
Alyssa Bonenberger, "we had double the amount of turnovers that TC3 had and that allowed them to attempt 21 more shots from the field than us."
Northampton held a +12 advantage on the boards and got to the line 33 times, but struggled to take advantage of their opportunities. "I saw some very positive things tonight, but I also saw a number of items we need to work on if we want to be a playoff team in our Region this year," stated Bonenberger.
Ashley Robinson (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South) added 15 points and
Mary Theresa Lehman (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Wyoming Seminary ) dished out 5 assists for the Spartans.
Northampton falls to 0-1 with the loss, while the Panthers improve to 1-0.
The Spartans are off until November 9th when they travel to Valley Forge Military Academy.
