#1 Cumberland Nips #3 Northampton, 4-3, in Extra Innings

VINELAND, NJ - The top-ranked Dukes of Cumberland County College rallied in the 9th inning to tie the game and then knocked off the 3rd ranked Spartans, 4-3, with a run in the bottom of the 10th in the NJCAA Game of the Week.

Heavy rains along the east coast forced the scheduled doubleheader to become a single 9-inning affair, but the two nationally-ranked teams lived up to the hype.

The Dukes jumped out to 1-0 lead in the bottom of of the first off starter Noah Weber (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin), but the Spartans rallied with a 3-run 3rd inning.

CJ Gantz (Moore Township, PA/Northampton ) singled to lead off the inning, followed by a single from CJ Peechatka (Henryville, PA/Pocono Mountain East).  Both runners advanced, Gantz to third and Peechatka to second, on a Dukes' throwing error.  Brandon Ernst (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) then picked up a RBI on a groundout to short, which scored Gantz.  Tommy Dunleavy (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North) then singled home Peechatka to make it 2-1 Northampton.  Tyler Horvath (Mt. Pocono, PA/Pocono Mountain East) singled, moving Dunleavy to second.  Corey Stouffer (Souderton, PA/North Penn) then laced a double, scoring Dunleavy and advancing Horvath to 3rd, to make it 3-1 Northampton.

The Dukes scored a run in the 4th to cut the deficit to 3-2, but that was all the scoring until the bottom of the 9th.  Down to their final strike, with two outs and a runner on 3rd, Ja'Ques Colon ripped a liner down the right field line to score the tying run.

After going scoreless in the top half of the 10th, Donnie Stone of Cumberland was able to connect off reliever Alex Super (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) to seal the 4-3 victory.

Noah Weber (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) got a no decision for the Spartans, going 9 innings, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 7 hits, while striking out 2 and walking one.  Super, who came on in the 10th, took the loss with 0.1 innings of work, allowing 1 run on 2 hits.

Corey Stouffer (Souderton, PA/North Penn) finished 4 for 5 with a RBI, while Dunleavy was 2 for 5 with a RBI and Gantz was 2 for 4.

The loss drops Northampton to 27-6 overall and 9-1 in Region XIX.

Cumberland improves to 33-1 overall and 14-0 in Region XIX.

The Spartans return to action on Tuesday when they host Union County College at 3:30pm in a single 9-inning matchup.
