Men's Soccer Knocks Off Delaware in OT for 3rd Consecutive Victory

MEDIA, Pa. - The Northampton men's soccer team won their 3rd consecutive game on Tuesday afternoon, downing Delaware County Community College, 2-1, in overtime at Phantom Field.

Stivan Kumbarov (Wind Gap, PA /Pen Argyl) put Northampton on the board at the 26:56 mark off an assist from Mehmed Letifov (Wind Gap, PA /Pen Argyl) and the Spartans were able to keep Delaware at bay the remainder of the half for a 1-0 halftime lead.

The Phantoms put the equalizer in the net with 15 minutes remaining in the contest, and after 90 minutes of the play the two EPAC foes went to overtime.

Northampton dominated play in the extra stanza, with Letifov getting tripped in the box 5 minutes into overtime.  Letifov converted the ensuring penalty kick to give the Spartans the crucial conference road victory.

"This was a battle," remarked Head Coach Mario Barrantes, "it was really a back and forth affair, but I thought we were able to control possession in the overtime period, which led to us getting the PK to win the game."

Nick Mazzella (Bangor, PA /Bangor ) made 13 saves for Northampton.

The win moves Northampton to 4-2-0 overall, 3-2-0 in Region XIX and 3-1-0 in the EPAC.

Delaware falls to 2-4-1 overall, 2-3-1 in the Region and 2-2-1 in conference play.

The Spartans are back in action on Thursday afternoon when they host the Hawks of Harrisburg Area Community College.  Kick-off is scheduled for 3:30pm and the game will be streamed live on the Northampton Sports Network.
