BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton men's soccer team dropped their Region XIX opener on Saturday, falling to Brookdale Community College, 5-0, on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Field.
The Jersey Blues broke a scoreless tie with 1:26 remaining the first half, to take a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Brookdale went up 2-0 with 31:27 remaining in the second half and the score remained 2-0 until 8:17 left in the game when the Jersey Blues added their 3rd tally of the day.
Brookdale would add two more goals in the final 2 minutes of the game, to make the final 5-0.
"It was really a tale of two halves," remarked Head Coach
Mario Barrantes, "I thought we played very well in the first half and had a number of opportunities on the offensive end that we did not convert. In the second half, Brookdale simply outworked us and took advantage of a number of breakdowns with our defense."
The loss drops Northampton to 1-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in Region XIX.
Brookdale, which received votes in the latest NJCAA national poll, improves to 1-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in Region XIX.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Newtown, PA to face Bucks County Community College at 3:30pm.
