BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton women's basketball team extended their winning streak to 3 games with an 81-66 victory over Raritan Valley Community College on Saturday afternoon at the Arthur L. Scott Center.
The Spartans led 52-51 entering the 4th quarter, but a change in defensive strategy led Northampton to outscore the Lions 29-15 in the final 10 minutes of action to earn the 15-point victory.
"We struggled at times in the first half to stop RVCC," commented Head Coach
Terrence Bomar, "I have to give my coaching staff credit for suggesting to switch up our defense in the 4th quarter, which helped us pull away. Defensively,
Ashley Cyrus (Philadelphia, PA/Penn Wood) and
Nevaeh Bowers (Reading, PA/Reading) came up huge for us with their ability to pressure RVCC's guards late in the game."
Ashley Cyrus (Philadelphia, PA/Penn Wood) led the Spartans with 17 points,
Xion Spence (Bushkill, PA/E. Stroudsburg North) added 16 points and
Briona McClain (Tobyhanna, PA/Pocono Mt. West ) had 12 to pace the Spartan offense.
The Spartans once again controlled the boards, out-rebounding RVCC, 53-46, with McClain hauling down 15 boards and Spence adding 8.
Northampton shot 37% from the field (30/82), despite only converting 1 of 16 from distance.
Northampton, now 3-1 overall, will travel to Lehigh Carbon Community College on Tuesday for a 5pm tip.
RVCC falls to 0-4 with the loss.
