BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton women's basketball team ended the first semester with a victory over NJCAA Division II Harcum College on Sunday afternoon, downing the Bears 70-64 at the Arthur L. Scott Center.
"Huge win for us today against a really good team," remarked Head Coach
Terrence Bomar, "
Briona McClain (Tobyhanna, PA/Pocono Mt. West ) dominated the boards, despite foul trouble, and
Ashley Cyrus (Philadelphia, PA/Penn Wood) was strong off the bench. We grew as a team today by hitting clutch shots from the foul line, which is an area that we have been struggling. I am very pleased with our ability to compete today as we head into break."
Northampton used a decisive advantage on the backboards (45-34) and at the free throw line (22 to 4) to earn the upset victory.
Briona McClain (Tobyhanna, PA/Pocono Mt. West ) finished with 15 points and 20 rebounds, while
Raquel Costache (Bushkill, PA/E. Stroudsburg North) led the Spartans with 18 points, followed by
Alayna Day (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg) with 13 and
Ashley Cyrus (Philadelphia, PA/Penn Wood) with 10.
Costache finished 6 for 10 from 3-point range, while
Xion Spence (Bushkill, PA/E. Stroudsburg North) added 11 rebounds.
The win moves the 13th ranked Spartans to 8-4 overall, while Harcum falls to 5-8.
The Spartans are now off until January 13th when they are scheduled to travel to Harrisburg to face the Hawks at 5pm.
