SCRANTON, Pa. - The Northampton Softball team dropped a doubleheader to NJCAA Division II Lackawanna College on Tuesday afternoon, falling 11-1 in game one and 11-6 in the nightcap.
GAME ONE - Lost 11-1
The Spartans fell behind 9-0 after two innings and never recovered vs. the Falcons.
Northampton was able to manufacture a run in the 3rd inning when
Jackie Jones (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) walked, stole second and stole third and scored on a
Emily Michael (Easton/Easton ) groundout to first base.
Madison Kessler (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua), who finished 2 for 2 and Jones accounted for all three of Northampton's hits in the game.
Hailey Druckenmiller (Orefield, PA/Parkland ) took the loss in the circle, allowing 11 runs on 13 hits, striking out 2 and walking 4.
GAME TWO - Lost 11-5
The nightcap took on a different tone as the Spartans struck early, scoring two runs in the top of the 1st.
Alexa Fancera (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) opened the game with a single and
Jackie Jones (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) reached on an error, putting runners at 1st and 2nd.
Maria Pezzino (Nazareth, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) grounded into a fielders choice, which advanced Fancera to 3rd and put Pezzino on 1st.
Madison Hendrickson (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) singled to center scoring Fancera and Pezzino advanced to 2nd. Pezzino then scored on an error by the Falcons, before
Emily Michael (Easton/Easton ) grounded out to end the inning.
The Spartans added 3 runs in the 3rd and were tied 5-5 with the Falcons entering the bottom of the 6th inning, when Lackawanna exploded for 6 runs to take an 11-5 lead. The Falcons shut the door on the Spartans in the top of the 7th to earn their 9th victory of the season.
Emily Michael (Easton/Easton ) took the loss for Northampton, allowing 11 runs (9 earned) over 6 innings.
Fancera finished 1 for 4,
Sophia Iovino (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) was 1 for 3 with a run scored and
Madison Hendrickson (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) was 2 for 2 with 4 RBI.
The two losses drops Northampton to 1-8 overall. The Spartans are back in action when they travel to Edison, NJ to face Middlesex College. Prior to the scheduled doubleheader, the Spartans and Colts will finish the 7th inning of their game from April 8th, with Northampton leading 11-6.
